the house in the neighborhood

Imagine getting a script page with a description of a decrepit old house in the midst of a charming neighborhood. What type of architecture conveys the spooky mood of the house? What colors show its age and what the house once was before all of the decay?

This scenario was a part of the job description for the Art Internship at Pixar. I saw the vision almost immediately after reading this and began my research to create this piece.

I was inspired by elements of Victorian elements, the Winchester Mystery House, the gray feel of New England during winter, and various horror films.

I wanted the house to feel eerie in a natural way. To make the home feel like it was in a posh neighborhood I added fencing, old on one side and seemingly pristine on the other. The same idea was applied to the yard and trees of the house, unkempt and decaying in comparison to its neighbor.
